Book Review: The Cave Dwellers by Christina McDowell

Publisher: Simon Schuster Canada, May 25th, 2021

Format: Paperback

Pages: 352

Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

A compulsively readable novel in the vein of The Bonfire of the Vanities—by way of The Nest—about what Washington, DC’s high society members do away from the Capitol building and behind the closed doors of their stately homes.

They are the families considered worthy of a listing in the exclusive Green Book—a discriminative diary created by the niece of Edith Roosevelt’s social secretary. Their aristocratic bloodlines are woven into the very fabric of Washington—generation after generation. Their old money and manner lurk through the cobblestone streets of Georgetown, Kalorama, and Capitol Hill. They only socialize within their inner circle, turning a blind eye to those who come and go on the political merry-go-round. These parents and their children live in gilded existences of power and privilege.

But what they have failed to understand is that the world is changing. And when the family of one of their own is held hostage and brutally murdered, everything about their legacy is called into question.

They’re called The Cave Dwellers.

My Review:

Thank you Simon and Shuster Canada for the copy of this book.

Read if you like: House of Cards, Political Dramas.

This book takes a look at politicians in Washington and their children, and the drama between adults and teens. It also looks at the privilege of these kids. I liked how the character, Bunny, started to realize and come to terms with her own privilege after a traumatizing event happens.

The book shows just how cut throat Washington is, with a bunch of social climbers, and how if your family wasn’t an old political family then you are looked down upon. Super elitist.

Overall, the book was engaging and I wanted to keep reading to figure out what would happen with the characters. The book is written from multiple different perspectives so that we as the reader can glimpse what is happening from multiple sets of eyes.

CW: drug and alcohol use, overdose, sexual content, inappropriate sexual relationships, sexual misconduct, harassment, and assault, suicide, and racism.
