To five-year-old Jack, Room is the world. It’s where he was born. It’s where he and Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. But to Ma, Room is the prison where she’s been kept since she was nineteen – for seven long years. Through her fierce love for her son, she has created a life for him in this eleven-by-eleven-foot space. But these walls can’t hold them forever…

Review:

This book was strange and messed up on so many levels and I could not put it down! The story is told from the perspective of five year old Jack who doesn’t realize that the life he has is because his mother was kidnapped and raped by her kidnapper. He has never left the room he was born in, and this has such an interesting effect on him! It also broke my heart how hard Ma fought to be strong for him even though she was struggling with her own trauma. Reading about this experience from the child was a really strange feeling and I thought this writing style was bold and strange and creative. I’ve read some reviews saying they didn’t like the writing or the perspective of the child, but I think that was a bold choice by the author! If this is a subject matter that you are able to read without too much trauma (I understand that this would be too much for some people) then I recommend you check it out!

Happy reading!
