Hello everyone!
I am hosting a summer reading challenge over on my Instagram feed and wanted to post a more in depth explanation of the challenge here. A fellow teacher and I run a book club at school and we thought it would be fun to create a summer reading challenge for the kids, and I wanted to share it with all of you! So feel free to join in!
Below you will find the explanation, as well as the books I’m planning on reading for each challenge.
- Beach read: this can be a fun summer read! Any book that you would read in the summer can do for this part of the challenge. For my book, I chose Daughter of the Pirate King because I thought that would be a fun summer read!
- Classic you have been wanting to read. This can be a classic that’s been on your shelves for a while, or a classic you have been meaning to read but never quite got to it! I’m planning on reading Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck as I have never read a Steinbeck and really need to!
- Summer romance: any book that includes a romance in the summer time! I have chosen Love and Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch as my pick as it looks like a fun summer read!
- A book nominated for an award: this book just needs to be nominated for an award, not win one! I chose Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, which won the 2009 Man Booker Prize!
- Try a new genre: this can be a genre you have never read, or one you don’t read very often! I chose Joyland by Stephen King as I have never read the horror genre! This will be my first King novel!
- A series you have been meaning to start: series can be tough to start as you might be committing to a whole slew of books. So pick one you have been wanting to start for a while! I chose Assassins Apprentice by Robbin Hobb as I’ve been meaning to read Hobb for a while now!
- A Canadian author: I live in Canada so I thought it would be fun to explore some authors from my country! I chose Life of Pi by Yann Martel!
- A POC author: diversity to me is important so I wanted to include this as part of the challenge. This is a book written by a Person of Colour. I chose Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon.
- The book is better than the movie: this is any book that’s been adapted into a movie/television series! I chose Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen.
- Setting is Non- Western: this means the book doesn’t take place in North America/Europe. And fantasy worlds don’t count! I chose A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini!

That is all! If you have any questions please let me know and I hope you found this helpful!
Happy reading!
