In a continent on the edge of war, two witches hold its fate in their hands.

Young witches Safiya and Iseult have a habit of finding trouble. After clashing with a powerful Guildmaster and his ruthless Bloodwitch bodyguard, the friends are forced to flee their home.

Safi must avoid capture at all costs as she’s a rare Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lies. Many would kill for her magic, so Safi must keep it hidden – lest she be used in the struggle between empires. And Iseult’s true powers are hidden even from herself.

In a chance encounter at Court, Safi meets Prince Merik and makes him a reluctant ally. However, his help may not slow down the Bloodwitch now hot on the girls’ heels. All Safi and Iseult want is their freedom, but danger lies ahead. With war coming, treaties breaking and a magical contagion sweeping the land, the friends will have to fight emperors and mercenaries alike. For some will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.

Review:

There has been a lot of hype around this book and series so I was really excited to read it. It was interesting, sometimes exciting, and the premise of the story was cool, but it just fell a little flat for me. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but it didn’t have that “I can’t put this book down” and “must read in one sitting” feel to it.

The book follows characters that have special abilities. Safi is a Truthwitch, which means she can tell truth from lie. Iseault is a Threadwitch, which means she can see the threads, of emotions, of others. And there are a ton of other abilities (pretty much any you could imagine). Which is a super creative and intriguing idea. I really enjoyed the concept of the book, but the plot development was a bit slow for me. The world building was well done though. There are three main kingdoms where the peace truce is about to end and war is on the horizon. That’s why Safi is so valuable, and the storyline is about who is going to control her when the war breaks out.

There is love, action, friendship, and loss in this book, and if you’re a fan of young adult fantasy, then you should definitely read this and form your own opinions. I’ll definitely read the second book because I want to know what happens.

Hopefully it is more exciting than this book!

Happy reading!
