Synopsis (Goodreads):

This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.

The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.

But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.

Review:

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting when I started this book, and I’ve read some reviews where people love this series, and others who say this series isn’t worth their time. And I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this book.

The premise was a little weird at first, and the book started out quite slow, but it picked up. The book centres around Mare, a poor girl from the slums who steals to keep her family fed. What makes Mare poor: it’s her blood. The thing that divides society in this book is blood. If you have red blood, you are poor with no abilities. If you have silver blood, you are part of the upper class of society and have special abilities that make them more powerful than the reds. Like I said, this was kinda weird for me at first, but it made more sense as the book went along, and there are a ton of plot twists that kept me hooked!

One thing that annoyed me was the love triangle. To me, it was weird and I didn’t really like how it developed. But l still enjoyed the book, and have already ordered the next one in the series because I want to see what happens!

Happy reading bookworms!
