In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king’s champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.
The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass–and it’s there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena’s fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.
Review:
I can’t believe I waited so long to start this series!
I loved how Mass was able to take a concept from Cinderella, but this time, the main character is an assassin, who sneaks into the ball to protect the prince! Celaena is a strong character who showed time and time again that nothing could break her! She comes from a prison to compete to become the king’s champion, as well as find out what’s lurking in the castle!
I could also see the beginnings of a love triangle, but not one that seems annoying. The prince has his certain charms, in that he doesn’t come across as cruel as his father, and he seems caring! The captain of the guard is also caring in his own way, and while he is quite different than the prince, he is similar in that they both are kind and caring characters. They grew up together and respect each other!
The world built by Maas is intriguing! There’s magic and symbols that can summon demons from other worlds, yet all that is outlawed by the cruel king! We have a hint that the main character is connected to magic, but we aren’t quite sure how! I believe this book is a great stepping stone to the rest of the series, and I want to read more as there are many questions left unanswered! So overall, I really loved this book!
Happy reading bookworms!
