Synopsis (Goodreads):
Neve Knightly lives in an ordinary world. Where déjà vu is nothing more than a mind-trick. Where premonitions are dismissed as mere coincidence. Where no one thinks twice about the glitches in their reality.
Neve Knightly is living a lie. But when her nightmare of a tragedy comes true the very next day, she can no longer seek solace in self-deception. The glossy enamel has been shattered, and she has caught a glimpse of what slithers just beneath the surface.
She now has the opportunity to decipher the enigma that’s been haunting her since childhood. But her quest soon becomes deeply entangled with the last two people she could have ever imagined: the love of her life, Dylan, who mysteriously vanished three years ago, and his estranged best friend, Romer, who seems to be guarding a secret of his own.
Romance, rancor, and redemption plummet as priorities, as their lives become riddled with peculiar happenings lying just outside the realm of science. And in search for salvation, they emerge at the brink of unveiling the best-kept secret in human history.
Book Review:
This book was fun, adventurous, and kept me on my toes. I love a book that isn’t too predictable, but I can still guess a few things and not be confused. I do not know a lot about different cognitive theories, but I felt like the author did a great job of explaining the Fray Theory in a way that would make sense to any reader.
The book starts out by introducing the reader to the character Neve. She is an interesting character in that she thinks that she has the ability to dream about the future, and that her dreams come true. It also starts out by having Neve get a text from her old boyfriend, who left her three years ago. Not going to lie, I thought this book was going to be a little too on the romance side, and I was not sure where the author was going to go with the story. But then one of Neve’s nightmares comes true, she meets a mysterious young man who seems to have his own secrets, and her old boyfriend, Dylan shows up, and seems to be hiding his own secrets. He is also mysteriously connected to the young man Neve meets. The book picked up right away to a fast and even pace, and I was consumed by the story and the characters. I knew there was going to be something about dreams, but I never would have guessed that the theory would have been so in depth.
The book was set in Vancouver, and as a fellow Canadian, it was great to have a book set in a Canadian city. I have not been to Vancouver before, but I have traveled a ton in British Columbia, and it is a beautiful place. The author described the setting well in that I felt like I had been transported to the busy West Coast city, and she was able to describe the scenery, and the wealthy shore houses in great detail.
This book was a great read, and I am excited to see where the story leads.
