Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The play will receive its world premiere in London’s West End on July 30, 2016.
It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.
While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.
Review:
I really loved this book. It was so nice to be back in the realm of witches and wizards, death eaters and muggles. I love all the Harry Potter characters, and we are introduced to some fabulous new characters.
I actually enjoyed the script form and it did not bother me at all to read the story as a script. One thing that did surprise me was how fast the beginning of the story went. I felt like we were jumping through time, and I would have liked to have known more about went on in the time we missed, but since this is meant for the stage, it made sense to get the story moving like that. It did not take away from the story at all, but as a huge fan, I would have liked to have gotten to know the kids a bit better.
One amazing aspect to the story was that we were able to see what kind of mischief Harry and Ginny’s son, Albus, got into, and to see how similar he is to Harry and Ginny. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the other two kids, as well as Ron and Hermione’s two children, but it was nice to be able to delve into the life of Albus Severus Potter. The story itself was well developed, with enough drama to keep me hooked the entire time.
An aspect to the story that I did not like was how they captured Harry as a father. Without spoiling too many things, I will just say that some of the things that Harry said and did, did not seem very Harry to me. I just felt like how his character had been developed did not match with some of his actions. But since this was set 19 years after the last book, it is tough to know what exactly happened during those years, so who knows why he acted the way he did. Overall, this was a cute short read, and I really enjoyed being back in the magical world of Harry Potter.
