Title: The Mortal Instruments (6 books included)
Author: Cassandra Clare
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Rating: I will rate each book individually.
Alright so I was on vacation in Florida when I started this series, so I thought it would be easier to finish off the series and then do one huge review for the entire series. So bear with me, this blog post will be longer than usual. I am going to review each book in the series and give my thoughts, and then the series as a whole. Lets start:
City of Bones: 4/5 stars.
This book was fun and action packed! I was hooked by the amazing world that Cassandra Clare created!! I loved the premise of the story, and the characters were great!
I am not a huge reader of fantasy, but I loved the imagination it took to create the characters and the world of the Shadowhunters. This book is an intriguing take on fighting demons, and while some parts were predictable, it was still a thoroughly enjoyable story.
There were a couple parts that bothered me, including the way Simon and Jace acted towards each other. I felt like they were trying to hard to be antagonistic. But what would a young adult novel be without a good love triangle. But then the triangle gets a little weird with some facts that you find out at the end of the book, which I will leave out, for spoiler reasons.
Overall, I did enjoy the book and I was excited to seeing how the series progresses!
City of Ashes: 4/5 stars.
So I was very excited to continue with the series, and even though it was not as good as I expected, I must admit it was a good second book to the series. I have a feeling it is like an in between book, because I didn’t find it as exciting as the first book, but it left things with a lot of potential for the third book!
There was just enough shock factor to keep me hooked, though! I enjoyed learning more about the characters, and there was something that happened (no spoilers) that made me really angry but then I realized it was probably a really cool twist to the story, and I warmed up to it!
Valentine is also back with much more power and strength, and he is one of those villains that is so brilliant you love to hate him!
City of Glass: 5/5 stars.
Wow I loved this book! First book in the series to give 5 stars! I loved that the book took you to a new setting, as I was getting a little bored with New York! We as readers finally get to see what’s so amazing about Idris and Alicante!
The characters have really grown a lot, too! Simon is learning more about who he is, and what he wants to be, Clary learns a lot about hers and her mothers past, and the Lightwoods will have the opportunity to show their strength as a family! I also really enjoyed how the friendships and relationships between the characters are developing, but that’s all I’ll say without revealing spoilers!
City of Fallen Angels: 4/5 stars
I did enjoy this book, but compared to the last one, City of Glass, it was somewhat slower. One aspect that is great about this book is you get to know a lot more about Simon, and how he is coping with his new situation. I thought Simon was annoying in the first and second books, but his character development has been brilliant, and he is slowly becoming one of my favourite characters. He is finally starting to try and live outside the Clary bubble a bit, even though he knows he will always be connected to her.
The development for a new conflict was well written as well! I was not sure where the series would continue, but Clare has connected all the dots quite well, and continued on with a thread in the plot! The book left you excited to see what would happen next.
City of Lost Souls: 4.5/5 stars.
This book was so action packed that I couldn’t tear myself away from it! I loved the plot, and how the story continued from the last book! I know in my last post I said Simon was becoming one of my favourite characters, but in this book it was Isabelle! This book finally delves a bit deeper into Isabelle’s character, and it’s nice to see how vulnerable she truly is, even though she acts tough (which is because she actually is tough, let’s be honest)! One thing that is really starting to annoy me though is Clary. I know she is written as someone who would do anything for the ones she loves, but she just seemed so selfish in this book and her actions made me angry sometimes. I also feel like her and Jace’s love story is just too much sometimes. I loved them at the end of City of Glass, but I find their relationship just too overbearing. But then, they do something that reminds me why they are so adorable and gives me renewed love for their characters! So I guess we are just going to have to see what happens in the last book!
City of Heavenly Fire: 5/5 stars.
This book was the perfect end to the series! With the final installment, the Shadowhunters have to, yet again, save the world from forces more threatening then Downworlders and lowly demons. The entire book had me hooked, and I could not put it down.
I love Isabelle, she is easily my favourite character! I love how she acts so tough, yet she slowly showed her weaknesses to those she loves! And of course, Simon grew as one of my fave characters because of how well is character developed. Alec also grew into his own in this book, and Jace and Clary annoyed me less! So great book! I also was excited to be transported back to Alicante and see what has been happening in the city, as well as we as readers get taken to a new setting on a fresh new adventure.
There was also a lot of surprises in this book, and one part of the ending I was not suspecting at all! Looking back at the first book, it’s amazing to see how far the characters have come! The world created by Clare is truly brilliant, and I cannot wait to read the Infernal Devices Trilogy!
I loved this series as a whole! I was not sure what to expect from the series, but it had me hooked from book one and I want to read more about the Shadowhunter world! Thank you Cassandra Clare for a great series and your imagination is truly remarkable.
If you have any thoughts you want to share about the series, feel free to comment or send me an email! Happy reading!
